Time is running out for Worcester residents to make sure they are registered to vote in the General Election on Thursday 4 July.

If you're not already on the electoral register you need to apply by 11.59pm on Tuesday 18 June to vote in next month's General Election.

Registering to vote takes just five minutes – head to gov.uk/register-to-vote. All you need is your National Insurance (NI) number.

Residents who are already registered to vote but would prefer not to go to a polling station in person on 4 July can apply for a postal vote or arrange for someone else to be able to vote on their behalf, with a proxy vote. Details of how to apply for either of these options are at www.worcester.gov.uk/elections.

The deadlines for these applications are:

  • Postal votes – 5pm on Wednesday 19 June
  • Proxy votes – 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.

Shane Flynn, Electoral Registration Officer for Worcester City Council, said:

"If you have recently turned 18 or moved home, it is particularly important that you act to ensure you are registered to vote. All you need is your National Insurance number and five minutes to log on to gov.uk/register-to-vote. Then you'll be able to make your voice heard by deciding who represents you in Parliament.

"Remember – if you're not registered before midnight on 18 June, you won't be able to vote on in the General Election on 4 July.

"Voters will also need to show photo ID at polling stations before being given their ballot papers. A wide range of photo identification can be accepted, which most people will already have, including a passport, driving licence, immigration document and some travel passes, such as an older person's bus pass. Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

"You can find the complete list and, if you don't have any of the documents on the list, apply for a free photo ID by the 26 June deadline at electoralcommission.org.uk/voterID."

Residents are also being reminded to carefully check where to vote on their polling card, as some new polling stations are being used for the forthcoming General Election.
