Worcester City Council are arranging a range of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, including the lighting of a beacon at Fort Royal Park.

A week of events will take place in Worcester leading up to and after the D-Day 80 anniversary on Thursday June 6.

The lead-up begins on Saturday 1 June at the Guildhall when colonel Stamford Cartwright will talk about the Worcester Regiment and its involvement in build up to D-Day and beyond, starting at 11am.

From Thursday 6 until Saturday 8 June there will also be displays in place at the Guildhall from 10am until 4pm daily, telling the story of D-Day and the Second World War and the role Worcester played in the military effort on the frontline and home front.

A new display is being unveiled at the Museum of the Worcestershire Soldier, Worcester City Museum and Art Gallery from the 28 May and available throughout the events taking place.

During D-Day (Thursday 6 June) the Worcester Yeomanry Museum Facebook page will be live reporting from the Regimental War Diary throughout the day.

Commemorations will then begin at 9.15am in Cathedral Square with the raising of the flag and standards at Cathedral Island. Pupils from Tudor Grange Academy and Tudor Grange Academy Perdiswell will be performing the School's Poem in period costume from 11am.

During the evening of D-Day there will be a commemoration event held from 7pm at Fort Royal Park.

There will be a raising of the flag, along with a choir and brass band, snare drum and drum head ceremony.

The Last Post will also be played, before the Lord Lieutenant lights a beacon at 9.15pm. As part of the commemoration audience members will be encouraged to sing-along to wartime songs being played.

For those unable to make the D-Day commemorations at Fort Royal Park there will be an event at Cathedral Square taking place on Saturday 8 June.

Between 10am and 4pm there will be a large screen, reenactors and other activities. The Royal British Legion will also be in attendance, before a closing down ceremony is held at 4pm by the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment.

A Service of Remembrance for the Worcestershire Regiment will be held at Gheluvelt Park from 10.30am on Saturday 22 June.

The service will include a talk on build-up to the Normandy Landing and Subsequent Activity.

Worcester City Council's Armed Forces Champion, Pat Agar, said: "We have a host of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

"The event at Fort Royal Park on the evening of Thursday 6 June will be one not to be missed, culminating with the lighting of a beacon.

"For those unable to make the evening event we have a whole range of activities planned in the build-up and after the anniversary.

"Make sure you don't miss out, join us to commemorate a significant moment in history 80 years on."
