The Mayor of Worcester, Cllr Louis Stephen is to welcome guests to the Guildhall to mark Windrush Day later this week.
At 11am on Thursday (June 22), the Mayor will give a short speech on the steps of the Guildhall which will be followed by reflections and stories from members of the Worcester Afro Caribbean Association.
The group will then be invited into the Mayor's Parlour for refreshments.
The aim of the day is to celebrate the contribution of the Windrush Generation and their descendants.
Mayor Cllr Louis Stephen said: "Thursday marks the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the passengers of the Empire Windrush to the UK. It is a day to celebrate the contribution that the Windrush generation and their descendants have made to Britain and I am pleased we are able to mark this occasion at the Guildhall."
The arrival of the ship HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury docks in 1948, bringing more than 800 passengers from the Caribbean, is a moment that shaped modern Britain.
Windrush Day has become a key symbolic moment in the story of the Black British contribution to this country and the broader post-war migration from across the Commonwealth and beyond that helped create the modern Britain that we share today.
Worcester's Afro Caribbean Association was set up in 2008 and offers a warm welcome to new members. It is a group aimed at bringing people together, particularly those who may feel isolated. The association meet regularly and hold social events such as afternoon teas and shared meals. They also go on walks and trips to the seaside and other places of interest.
Eloise Spence, Chair of the Worcester Afro Caribbean Association said: "Windrush Day means a lot to us. Our parents paved the way for us and did a lot to help this country – working in the health service and the rail and bus service and we participated in many other areas too – many of the Windrush generation were service personnel who served in the war. Sometimes we felt a bit neglected and Windrush Day is a time to remind others of the part we played in building this country."
