The Mayor of Worcester, Cllr Louis Stephen, was joined by military personnel and veterans yesterday (19 June) to observe the raising of the Armed Forces Day Flag over the Guildhall to mark the start of Armed Forces Week.
Cllr Stephen said: "We are flying the flag over the Guildhall as a gesture of appreciation for all those who put themselves in the front line to protect our freedom and way of life. We are also showing solidarity for their loved ones and families."
The Mayor was joined by the deputy Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Sir Nicholas Lechmere DL and Jean Waldron, the chair of Royal British Legion Worcester, along with members of 214 (Worcestershire) Battery Royal Artillery and the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment Association. Serving members of the Mercian Regiment also attended.
The Mayor made a welcome speech and the Last Post was played before a minute's silence was observed. This was followed by prayers and the raising of the Armed Forces flag.
Worcester City Council's Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Pat Agar said: "It is important that we remember the courage and sacrifice made by our brave service men and women in order to keep us safe. Showing our support for the Armed Forces provides a valued morale boost for the troops and their families, many of whom are local residents."
