Public Consultation for Worcester’s Scala Theatre - Wednesday, December 14 at The Guildhall

Published: 09 December 2022

Plans for an exciting new arts venue in the heart of Worcester city centre will be revealed to the public on Wednesday, December 14 from 1pm to 8pm at The Guildhall in High Street.

Everyone is welcome to attend this public consultation, view the plans, and share feedback with Worcester City Council and other representatives.

The plans will be on display throughout the seven-hour event, and at 3pm and again at 7pm, the architects will give a presentation to set out the proposals in detail.

The ambitious proposals will transform the Angel Place area, attracting world-class arts, music, and comedy acts to the Worcester, as well as giving a much-needed boost to local businesses.

The eagerly anticipated arts centre will revive the historic Scala Theatre, Worcester's original 1920s cinema.

The spectacular renovation has been designed by architects Burrell Foley Fischer, who also designed the Hall for Cornwall, as well as the Crucible in Sheffield, among several other award-winning venues.

The new arts venue will have a significant cultural impact in terms of attracting new audiences and a broader better range of artists and programme.

It will also have a strong positive effect on the local economy at large, as has been shown by other cultural developments on this scale around the UK in recent years.

The arts centre proposals are part of the Future High Streets Fund, which includes £3.5million worth of public realm improvements to Worcester's city centre, many of which are already being enjoyed by residents.

The City Council's Policy and Resources Committee will be asked on Tuesday 13 December to agree to the submission of a planning application for the Scala redevelopment.

If the Scala redevelopment does get the go-ahead, the existing Swan Theatre will continue to operate for community theatre groups for the foreseeable future.

Community arts groups have already contributed to design plans for the Scala, suggesting several ideas that were adopted by the architects.

The areas around Angel Street and Angel Place, The Foregate, The Cross and Trinity Street are all being regenerated as part of the Future High Streets Fund work, creating a vibrant urban neighbourhood with new shops, cafes, restaurants and bars, as well as housing and office space, transforming the city into a more attractive destination for young people and families.
