Worcester will stand together later this month to mark The International Day of Peace.

Every year events take place across the world on Saturday 21 September – designated as ‘Peace Day’.

This year Worcester City Council is holding its first Peace Day event on the day.

Taking place at Cathedral Square between 11.15am and 12.45pm, the free event is set to include songs, poems, speeches and the laying of candlelights and flowers.

Participants will also join with a minute of silence across the globe at midday. This will be followed by the raising of a peace flag.

The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Mel Allcott, is one of the dignitaries speaking at the event.

She said: “In Worcester we will be thinking about and focusing on peace for the day.

“I am very proud that in our city we build bridges across our communities by spreading the message of love not hate.”

Worcester City Council’s Deputy Leader and Communities Committee Chair, Councillor Jabba Riaz, is leading the event organisation team.

He said: “There has never been a better time to come together and unite in a call for peace across the world.

“This event will reflect the City Council’s objective of bringing together communities of all faiths and backgrounds.

“We’d love to see people join us for Peace Day so we can unite under the umbrella of humanity and bring all cultures and people together.

“There will be talks during the event about continuing a culture of peace in our city. We welcome everybody to join us at Cathedral Square for the event on Saturday 21 September from 11.15am.”

The International Day of Peace is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Later in the day a Faith Conference will be held at the Guildhall which will see faith and belief representatives gather to reflect Worcester’s diverse community.

The event, running between 1.30pm and 3pm, will allow representatives to share aspirations, achievements and challenges.

Councillor Allcott added: “We would like to see as many faiths and beliefs as possible represented at the Faith Conference to reflect Worcester’s diverse community.

“It is a free event but places need to be reserved by visiting www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/worcester-faith-conference-tickets-957344793047 "
