Former Mayor hands cash over to Worcester charities

Published: 02 July 2019

The former Mayor of Worcester has handed over more than £30,000 to three city charities.

Councillor Jabba Riaz handed over his chain of office in May after a busy 12-months of fundraising and promotion of his campaign to encourage Worcester people to love, not hate.

Through a packed programme of events, concerts, community fairs and plenty more, Cllr Riaz raised the £30,000-plus, which has been divided between St Richard's Hospice, Worcester Community Trust and Worcester Live.

Cllr Riaz said: "It was an enormous honour to wear the chain of office as Mayor of Worcester. It was a role I treated very seriously and, I hope, respectfully and it is a source of great pride to me that I was able to raise so much vital funding for these much-loved city charities.

"My theme for the year was love, not hate and I chose St Richard's Hospice, Worcester Community Trust and Worcester Live as my charities because they all play a role in bringing our different communities together.

"I want to thank our great city and all the residents and council officers who supported me in my year as Mayor – I couldn't have done it without you."

St. Richard's Hospice is a local charity which supports patients with life-limiting illnesses, and their loved ones; Worcester Community Trust runs six community centres across the city, offering a wide range of activities particularly for young and older residents; Worcester Live is the main arts provider for the city, running the Swan Theatre, Huntingdon Hall, Henry Sandon Hall and also the annual Worcester Festival.
