A popular games area in Worcester is a hive of activity after being refurbished ready for the summer holidays.

The multi-use games area at the Horizon Community Hub off Midland Road has been fitted with a new playing surface and improved equipment.

The play area – operated by Worcester Community Trust in partnership with Worcester City Council – includes new goals, basketball hoops and permanent cricket stumps.

The fencing around the goals has also been replaced, with the height increased from three metres to five metres, to prevent balls flying out of play.

Outside the playing area, a new youth shelter provides a space for youngsters to relax and socialise.

The work is part of the City Council’s Play Plan which will see investment in outdoor spaces for children and young people over the next 10 years.

Councillor Jabba Riaz, Chair of the City Council’s Communities Committee and ward member for Fort Royal, said: “This is a fantastic facility which encourages play and is free for all members of the community.

“We’ve resurfaced the area which means that children are less likely to get injured and they’re really enjoying the refurbished facility.

“Young people and the youth are absolutely core to our policy-making at the City Council.”

The completed scheme provides an accessible, robust and cost-effective community facility for the Fort Royal community.

Worcester Community Trust holds children’s groups at Horizon Hub on Thursdays between 4pm and 8pm.

Leisa Taylor, Youth Work Project Manager at Worcester Community Trust, said: “This refurbishment means a lot to young people in the area who asked if we could revamp their valued space, after they pointed out that it was getting a bit tired.

“It attracts young people of all ages for a variety of sports and is a valuable resource for our youth delivery.

“It's a great addition to the play park and youth shelter at the side of Horizon Hub and we're looking forward to seeing it being used again.”
