Worcester City Council is asking local black communities to share their stories and experiences of living in the city during Black History Month (October 2020).
Photos, stories and memorabilia will be shared on the Community Worcester Facebook page (www.facebook.com/communityworcester) throughout the month and will then be loaded on a new 'Know Your Place-Worcester' digital platform which is due to launch in December.
According to the 2011 Census, 6,114 people in Worcestershire (1.1% of the county's population) identify themselves as Black British, White and Black Caribbean or White and Black African. The number has increased from the 2001 Census, which records 3,563 people from the same ethnic backgrounds.
Cllr Lynn Denham, Vice Chair of the Communities Committee, says: "Black History Month is a great opportunity to explore black communities' memories of life in Worcester.This is an important and all-too-often neglected aspect of the city's history.
"I urge people to share photos, memorabilia and anything else which will help to improve our appreciation of black residents' culture and their experiences of life in the city. By understanding the past, we will be in a much better place to improve life chances and opportunities for future generations."
