Half the homes in the city will see a change to their bin collections later this month, as Worcester moves to a 'same material, same week' approach.
This means that, in the week of 29 July, all residents will have their black bins emptied and their green bins collected the following week. Bin collections will then continue in the same sequence.
At the moment, in any week half the city have their black bins emptied and the other half, their green bins. After the change on 29 July, all Worcester households will have their green or black bins collected in the same week. This will help make the City Council’s bin collection service more efficient and help the management of the flow of recyclables and waste through sorting and treatment facilities.
Just under 23,000 homes will be affected by the change. They will need to put their black bins out for two weeks running – in the weeks of 22 and 29 July. After that, the normal sequence of green bins one week and black bins the next will resume.
The City Council is directly contacting every household affected by the changeover, and supplying green sacks that can be used in case their green bins fill up. Residents can also collect more free bags from the Guildhall, if required. These green sacks can be put out alongside green bins for collection in the week of 29 July.
Just over 200 homes will also see a change in their day of collection. The City Council is writing directly to each of the residents affected to tell them of the change.
Cllr Karen Lewing, Vice Chair of Worcester City Council’s Environment Committee, said: “The one thing people need to remember is that, in the week of 29 July, it’s their black bin that needs to go out.
“We are going to great lengths to make sure that all the residents who will see a change in bin services are fully aware of what is happening. The reality is that, once we get through the week of 29 July, bin collections will settle down again into the normal pattern of black bins one week and green the next, so we hope that most people will hardly notice the difference.
“If anyone is unsure about their bin collection day, they can check on the Council website."
Please note that the new collection calendar will not be live until 29 July 2024.
The collection of brown garden waste bins is not affected by these changes.
