Worcester City Council is set to close its Saturday Skip services in September, as part of a drive to meet a £2.5 million funding gap.
Currently, skips are provided at seven city locations on a rota basis, allowing residents to dispose of large items conveniently and at no cost to them.
The service is expensive to run and the Council's Policy and Resources Committee has now agreed to close it down, in order to deliver a saving of £50,000.
In future people will be able to take their items to one of the Household Recycling Centres at Bilford Road and Horsford Road, or to book a collection with the City Council's bulky waste service.
The final round of Saturday Skips collections will start this weekend and run as follows:
- 29 July – Weir Lane
- 5 August – Farmer's Boy, Tolladine Road
- 12 August – Shap Drive
- 19 August – Liverpool Road
- 26 August – KGV playing fields, Brickfield Road
- 2 September – Dines Green Community Centre
- 9 September – Waverly Street.
In all cases, the skips will be on site from 8am to midday on each of these dates.
Lloyd Griffiths, City Council Director of Operations, Homes and Communities, said: "We appreciate that this may be a disappointment to some people, however there are alternatives easily available, including booking a bulky waste collection with the City Council, signing up for our garden waste service, or taking items to a household recycling centre."
