Worcester City Council has been successful in its bid to a national fund to provide more electric vehicle (EV) charging points in Worcester.
The Government's Office for Zero Emission Vehicles(OZEV) has offered the Council up to £68,560 to help with the cost of installing EV charging points at Tallow Hill and King Street car parks.
When the Council's Environment Committee meets on Tuesday 14 March it will be asked to accept the funding offer and also approve the investment of £55,000 from its own funds to deliver the ten new dual charging points.
Councillor Andy Stafford, Chair of the Environment Committee, said: "Providing more EV charging points is a key element of our Environmental Sustainability Strategy, helping to support the UK's transport future, with the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles being banned from 2030.
"It is essential that the Council provides charging points in its car parks, because 33 per cent of Worcester households do not have access to their own driveway and therefore may not be able to charge their electric vehicles at home.
"Our data mapping shows that a significant number of residents who live within walking distance of the Council's Tallow Hill and King Street car parks are likely to own electric cars either now or in the near future but do not have off-street parking. That makes these two car parks ideal locations for EV charging points."
If the scheme is approved it would see six dual EV charge points installed at Tallow Hill, allowing 12 vehicles to be charged simultaneously, and four dual points at King Street, when eight vehicles could be charged simultaneously.
The Council's £55,000 contribution would come out of a £200,000 pot that has already been set aside to be invested in EV charging infrastructure in its car parks.
The new scheme would build on the Council's provision of nine charging points at St Martin's Gate car park. These have proved popular since going live in October 2021, with more than 12,000 individual charging sessions, powering EV vehicles to drive over 888,550 miles
