More electric vehicle charging points proposed for Worcester

Published: 25 October 2022

Proposals for more electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the city are to be considered by Worcester City Council's Environment Committee.

A report to be considered on Tuesday 1 November sets out proposals of installing new charging terminals at car parks in Tallow Hill and King Street.

The move will build on the success of the 12 EV charging points which are already in place at St Martin's Gate car park.

Cllr Andy Stafford, Chair of the Environment Committee, said: "With the purchase of new petrol and diesel cars due to be banned from 2030, ownership of electric cars is rising, and we are seeing increasing usage of the charging points we already have at St Martin's Gate.

"Worcester needs to be prepared for the growing demand for EV charging and that is why I hope the proposals for Tallow Hill and King Street will be supported."

Tallow Hill and King Street car parks have been chosen because they are in areas where residents do not currently have access to off-street charging.

The report to the committee proposes that up to ten twin charging units are installed at Tallow Hill, allowing up to 20 vehicles to power-up at the same time. At King Street, there would be up to five twin EV terminals made available, with a capacity for the simultaneous charging of ten cars.

Subject to available budget, additional chargers could be installed in these or other car parks to maximise the benefit from the £200,000 fund already established for this purpose by the City Council.

The Council currently offers 12 charging points in St Martin's Gate car park. Since these new terminals went live in October 2021, there have been over 1,000 individual charging sessions at the site, collectively powering electric vehicles to drive over 73,000 miles.

Longer term, the Council intends to develop a strategy for the rollout of more EV charging in Worcester. This will set out how the Council will use the latest data to identify the future uptake of electric vehicles in the city, pinpoint where charging infrastructure is required, and then work with partners to meet that demand.
