Mayor of Worcester trains for 10k for charity – will you sponsor him?

Published: 24 August 2022

The Mayor of Worcester is in training to join this year's Worcester 10k run to raise funds for two local charities – and he's hoping local people and businesses will sponsor him.

Councillor Adrian Gregson will become the first Mayor to take part in the Worcester City Runs while in office when he crosses the starting line on Sunday 4 September.

Competing as part of a team of at least ten, he will be aiming to raise funds for his two Mayoral charities: Severn Arts, which works to bring high-quality music and arts to a wide range of people across Worcestershire; and Onside Advocacy, the provider of support and services to ensure fairness and equality for adults who may be vulnerable, disadvantaged or discriminated against.

Cllr Gregson said: "I have completed 10k runs in the distant past and I've decided to take the plunge again because the Worcester City Runs are such a great opportunity to raise money for these two brilliant charities.

"I'll be training when I can in between Mayoral engagements, but I'm not likely to set any speed records on the day! Come the big day I'll be there to show the truth in the phrase that it's the taking part that counts."

Local residents who want to support the Mayor's valiant effort can sponsor him via his Just Giving page

The 2022 Worcester City Runs will bring two days of events to the city on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 September, with the return of the Worcester City Half Marathon, 10k and Young Athletes Run, along with Paula Radcliffe's Families on Track initiative for a second time. The event is being organised by Events of the North, in partnership with Worcester City Council. Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity is the new official charity partner for 2022.

Worcester City Run founder and race director Steve Cram adds: "Each year at the Worcester City Runs, we're amazed by how many people use the event to raise money for good causes. Adrian is supporting two very deserving charities as Mayor of Worcester and we're delighted that he's going to take on the challenge of the 10k as part of his fundraising. Like everyone in the race, he's certain to get brilliant support from the people of Worcester, who always turn out in force to cheer on our runners."

Entries for the 2022 Worcester City Runs are open now.  A place on the Worcester City Half Marathon is £35 for runners in affiliated clubs and £37 for unaffiliated runners. Places on the Worcester City 10k cost £26/£28 respectively, and the cost of a place on the Young Athletes Run (one mile for U11s and 3k for U15s) is £8. The price for a family team of between three and five at Paula's Families on Track is £45. Participants in all of the events will receive a t-shirt, medal and goody bag.

Other event partners include Worcester Physiotherapy Clinic, Active Foot Company and Worcester Whitehouse Hotel.
