Work is due to begin on major improvements to Perdiswell Park which will make it not only a haven for wildlife – but also more accessible to visitors.
This month will see the first phase of the work begin, with the creation of almost five hectares of wildflower meadow.
Bird and bat boxes will be placed at suitable locations, as well as bee banks – mounds of loose soil set aside for burrowing mining bees. Suitable shelter will also be provided for hibernating creatures.
A specialist landscape contractor will be repairing existing pathways and creating a new stretch of hard-surfaced path suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. Ten new seats will be installed, along with interpretation panels illustrating the history and biodiversity of the park.
A second phase of the scheme will begin in November and will see 2.5 hectares of new native woodland planted.
Lloyd Griffiths, Worcester City Council's Director of Operations, Homes and Communities, said: "Perdiswell is already a popular destination for walkers and cyclists and we plan to make it as attractive to wildlife as it is to visitors.
"The new woodland and the wildflower meadows will be a huge step forward in our commitment to boost biodiversity in the city wherever we can and additions such as bee banks, bird and bat boxes and shelters for hibernating animals are all extra features to give nature a helping hand."
