Countdown to Christmas celebrations begins in Worcester

Published: 16 November 2021

Final preparations are being made for a variety of festive celebrations in Worcester, as the city once again prepares to welcome visitors from across the UK and beyond this Christmas.

The fun begins with a festive light switch-on event on Saturday 27 November. Excitement will build in Worcester's Cathedral Square from 2.00pm, with a range of performances from local groups and artists including Perry Wood Junior School Choir, pantomime stars from the Swan Theatre's Beauty And The Beast production, and performances from singing sensations Vinesto, Andy Grimwood and Laura Christopher.

Youthcomm radio presenters will compere throughout, with the official light switch-on taking place at 6.00pm. Further details are available on the Visit Worcester.

"We're really looking forward to welcoming people to Worcester over the festive period – we'll be pulling out all the stops to make this Christmas extra-special," says Councillor Lucy Hodgson, Chair of Worcester City Council's Place and Economic Development Committee.

"We have a fantastic variety of independent retailers, big-name high street stores, restaurants and bars in the city. After a particularly challenging year, I urge everyone to buy local and support Worcester's traders this Christmas."

Christmas trees will add to the festive spirit from next week, positioned at the Guildhall, Cathedral Square, St. Andrew's Gardens and Gheluvelt Park.

Worcester's traditional Victorian Christmas Fayre will make its comeback from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 December 2021. This year there will be almost 200 stalls across the city centre, selling local arts and crafts, delicious street food and gifts – all accompanied by a fantastic programme of entertainment.

Cotswold Markets, which manages stalls at the Fayre, will also be bringing a smaller Christmas Gift Market to Worcester from 6 to 22 December.A row of wooden chalets will line the High Street, selling a variety of festive wares.

There will also be additional market stalls in Cathedral Square on the weekends of 11-12 and 18-19 December.
