Plans afoot to celebrate landmark 2022 events in style

Published: 25 October 2021

City councillors are reviewing proposals to ensure Worcester makes the most of two landmark events in 2022: The Queen's Platinum Jubilee and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games (28 July – 8 August).

At Worcester City Council's Place and Economic Development Committee meeting on 1 November, councillors will discuss proposals to support the celebrations and make the most of related opportunities with a £40,000 investment.

In 2022, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service.

To mark the historic occasion, a beacon will be lit from the summit of Fort Royal Park on 2 June 2022 – and small grants will be offered to residents who wish to hold street parties.

Plans for events to be held over the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday (3–5 June 2022) are underway, focusing on historic links between the city and royalty across the centuries.

Local people and community groups will also be encouraged to 'plant a tree for the Jubilee'.

"It is fantastic to have two significant events to celebrate in 2022, bringing people together and giving us something to look forward to," says Cllr Lucy Hodgson, Chair of Worcester City Council's Place and Economic Development Committee.

"It is particularly exciting that the 2022 Commonwealth Games is taking place so close to the city.It has the potential to deliver significant economic benefits for Worcester and the West Midlands region through tourism, job creation, skills and business opportunities."

The City Council sees the Birmingham Commonwealth Games as an opportunity to secure contracts for local businesses and to attract more tourists to Worcester – as well as being a catalyst to engage more residents in physical exercise.

The Place and Economic Committee meets at the Guildhall at 7pm on Monday 1 November. The meeting can be watched live on Worcester City Council's YouTube channel
